Albania's attempts to show its European neighbors that it can hold an uncontested election have again failed: nearly two weeks after the elections were held, winners have not been announced and the Election Commission seems to be rewriting its rules as they go. A new report was published today by the International Crisis Group states that "These legal and technical disputes now risk exacerbating an already deep and resentful political conflict between [Edi] Rama, still the sitting Mayor of the capital city, and Albanian's Prime Minister Sali Berisha and their respective supporters. Public protests risk becoming violent in the currently highly charged environment."
